9 incredible ways to naturally bring pain relief to those suffering from sinus pain or a sinus infection. Make sure to have the the various herbs, components and a neti pot available before you need them.

From nasal lavage to pineapple enzymes, these time-honored home treatments can help ease the misery.

While some ailments are decidedly seasonal, sinus mayhem does not discriminate. Winter flu, spring and fall allergies, summer colds … they all seem to beckon the sinuses into painful states of congestion, inflammation and infection.

And honestly, few common maladies are as aggravating as angry sinuses. At their best they’re a nuisance; at their worst, sinus conditions bring painful pressure to the entire face – ice picks in the eyes and oral surgery without Novocain come to mind. Not fun.

Antibiotics may be called upon if you’ve got a bacterial infection, but it’s best to avoid the indiscriminate use of antibiotics, and they are not all that effective in treating sinus problems anyway.

A 2012 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that when adults with sinusitis were given either a 10-day course of amoxicillin or a placebo, both groups felt equal recovery by the third day. Which leaves questionable over-the-counter chemical concoctions and their often-uncomfortable side effects … or the better choice, natural remedies. Here’s what you can try:

1. Leverage lavage (AKA the sinus rinse)

Nasal lavage is the act of rinsing your nasal passages – and as undelicious as that may sound to the uninitiated, it works. You can use a specially designed squeeze bottle or a neti pot with a simple homemade saline solution.

The FDA notes that, “nasal rinsing can remove dirt, dust, pollen and other debris, as well as help to loosen thick mucus. It can also help relieve nasal symptoms of allergies, colds and flu.” While different devices may vary slightly, the basic how-to is:

Lean over a sink with your head tilted sideways (and your forehead and chin roughly level to avoid a mouthful of salt water).

Breath through your mouth, put the spout of the saline-filled container into your upper nostril and pour, allowing the mixture to drain through the lower nostril.

Clear your nostrils, then repeat with the other nostril with your head tilted the other way.

Few experts argue the efficacy of nasal lavage. That said, there are some precautions to take. If you make your own rinse, absolutely use water that is distilled, sterile, previously boiled and cooled, or filtered using a filter with an absolute pore size of 1 micron or smaller. Do not use straight tap water.

And be sure to rinse the device with contaminant-free water and allow it to air dry.

2. Start steaming

Steam can go far in moistening the sinuses and loosening the muck that is taking up residence there. “Sprinkle a few drops of eucalyptus or menthol in the shower and steam up your bathroom,” advises Robert Graham MD, MPH, an internist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

If you need relief and it isn’t shower time, fill the sink or a bowl with piping hot water and drape a towel over your head as your breathe in the steam. Steam for 10 minutes, two to four times a day.

3. Send in the clouds

By way of humidifier, that is. If the air in your living space is dry, adding moisture to it can really help with the sinuses; they don’t like it too dry – but it shouldn’t be moist enough inside to fog up the windows. And be sure to follow instructions for regular cleaning – a fine mist of moist mold is not what you want.

4. Bring on the bromelain

Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme (one that breaks down protein) found in pineapple. (It’s the reason you can’t put fresh pineapple in Jell-O; it digests the protein and won’t allow it to set. Impress your friends with that one.) It has been used in Central and South America for centuries for indigestion and reducing inflammation, and was approved by the German Commission E to treat swelling and inflammation after surgery, particularly sinus surgery.

As a supplement it is used to treat a variety of conditions, particularly effective in reducing inflammation from infection and injuries, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Bromelain may help reduce cough and nasal mucus associated with sinusitis, and relieve the swelling and inflammation caused by hay fever, the Medical Center notes.

If you plan on trying bromelain, check with your health care provider first since it may interact with other medications.

5. Have some herbs

The American Academy of Otolaryngology notes that Chinese herbalists use magnolia flower as a remedy for clogged sinus and nasal passages. “In conjunction with other herbs, such as angelica, mint, and chrysanthemum,” they write, “it is often recommended for upper respiratory tract infections and sinus headaches, although its effectiveness for these problems has not been scientifically confirmed.”

6. Stay hydrated

Number one rule when you’re sick: Drink plenty of fluids. The same goes for when you have sinus trouble. Hydration helps the body in numerous ways, and is good for sore sinuses. The Mayo Clinic recommends drinking a lot of water to, “help dilute mucous secretions and promote drainage.” But they also warn: “Avoid beverages that contain caffeine or alcohol, as they can be dehydrating. Drinking alcohol can also worsen the swelling of the lining of the sinuses and nose.”

7. Sip soup

In this case, grandma was right. According to The New York Times, chicken soup actually does help with congestion. And while they note that the hot steam from the soup may be the reason, studies show that there may be actual anti-inflammatory effects from the ingredients in the soup. But with the steam factor in mind, you can also benefit from other hot beverages – ginger tea or hot tea with honey and lemon are both steamy, soothing options.

8. Go spicy

You know how spicy foods hit the mouth and nose and open everything up? The New York Times notes that foods that contain hot peppers or horseradish may help clear sinuses; others also confirm that spicy foods like mustard, curry, and wasabi may help clear sinuses.

9. Commence compressing

A hot compress across your sinuses will help to relieve pain. The American Academy of Otolaryngology recommends alternating a hot compress for three minutes with a cold compress for 30 seconds. Repeat three times per treatment, and do it two to six times a day.

And last but not least, a word to the wise. Get thee to a doctor immediately if you have symptoms that may be a sign of a serious infection, including: Pain or swelling around your eyes: swollen forehead; severe headache; confusion; double vision or other vision changes; stiff neck; or shortness of breath.
There may come a time when the need for antibiotics may present itself. And in the normal course a life it would consist of going to a hospital to have it administered or prescribed.

But, what if you are days and miles away from any hospital? Or what if a catastrophy occurs making it impossible to get to a doctor? Who knows what the situation may be that prevents one from obtaining something that may be there only life saving option.

Here is a very affordable book that I just did research on and it falls right into the tempo that I am trying to achieve for this blog. Click on the book image and it will take to you to the site where you read about it some more and purchase it. Right now they have it for a discounted price.

The book was written by Carolyn Stephenson and here is some of what she has to say:

"Look, when you get into a tight spot, you have to use whatever you can find to keep yourself or a loved one healthy. I’ve worried about this kind of thing for a long, long time. What would I ever do if I couldn’t find a doctor and someone I love was sick? It was an issue that literally kept me awake at night. So... instead of continuing to worry, I decided to come up with some answers. I decided to do some research. I went to five different bookstores in my city and found 72 books on Herbal Remedies.

I bought every single one of them. Some books were good, but most were full of “fluff”. So I went to a few doctors, a chiropractor, and an herbalist. I asked a lot of questions and I took notes from every visit. I also recorded some of the interviews and went back over the information again and again.

I also went to several medical libraries, looked up documented research on many online research journals and generally looked for any information on the subject I could find. After all this research...

The remedies I’ve discovered (that actually have a shot at working) represent the findings and gleanings of thousands of hours worth of research. I have explained the secrets I’ve discovered in a small, easy to read, 34 page book. It’s written in plain English and you can read it from cover to cover in about 45 minutes or less. It can also serve as a sort of quick reference book if you need help in a hurry.

The book is called “Emergency Herbs” and it explains exactly what herbs to use in a crisis, but also... how to use them. Most of these remedies don’t cost much either which makes it even better. And I promise... as soon as you read this book... "

So click on the book above and check it out.

Thanks,

Fighting bruxism

Statistics reveal that millions are suffering from bruxism which is the involuntary clenching or grinding of teeth that generally occur during the sleep. The greatest risk involved with bruxism is that many of the bruxers are unaware of this habit in them until irrevocable damage has been inflicted to their teeth and gums.

Clenching the teeth with immense force or grinding them on a continuous basis can cause permanent damage to the gums and teeth as it would result in the crushing through the protective shield created by the enamel, thus damaging the roots.

Charles Harrison, a bruxer himself, came up with innovative methods for treating bruxism where other treatments were found to be ineffective. The personal sufferings of Charles Harrison caused by bruxism resulted in the formation of cureforbruxism. By the age of nine, his teeth got flattened after incessant grinding done during the night.

Resorting to neither the $500 night guard nor a sports mouth guard could spare his teeth from further damage. Visiting a dentist, an acupuncturist, neither a hypnotherapist nor a craniologist helped him in his struggle against bruxism.

This made him probe deep into the cause of the night chewing. This resulted in the formation of the site cureforbruxism.com where he provides a detailed step-by-step procedure for getting over the illness.

Bruxism is a disease which is not recognized by many until irreversible damage has been made to the teeth which might result in a huge dental expenditure if not detected on time.

Some of the common symptoms are cited below:
• Morning migraines
• Painful jaws
• Insomnia
• Teeth oversensitive to cold, hot and citrus
• Regular headaches
• Restless sleeps during the night
• Chipping of teeth

Charles Harrison, the founder of the site cureforbuxism.com has come up with an effective, at the same time, simple and inexpensive method of curing this illness.

If you long for putting an end to the grinding of the teeth or if you prefer your natural teeth to a night guard before going to bed, this is the right place to be in. The program provides a detailed procedure that can minimize bruxism in an individual.

Some aspects covered by the program are mentioned below:

1. Identifying the real cause for bruxism.
2. Recognizing the relationship between one’s sleeping posture and the problem.
3. Analyzing the impact of herbal remedies.
4. Ascertaining the three health supplements that could aid the body in fighting the disease.
5. Becoming skilled at “Press Clench” exercise.
6. Gaining knowledge of the one major practice that guarantees to stop the unintentional clenching and grinding of teeth during sleep.
7. Providing insight to other exercises that would help in completely recovering from bruxism.

Value Chart

Researchers report that mesquite is highly effective in balancing blood sugar. The natural sweetness in the pods comes from fructose.

Fructose does not require insulin to be metabolized making it safe for diabetics. The high rate of dietary fiber, pads are 25% fiber, causes the nutrients in mesquite to be absorbed slowly preventing the spikes and valleys in blood sugar.

With a glycemic index of 25, mesquite requires a longer time to digest then many grains. The digestive time for mesquite is to 4 to 6 hours unlike wheat that digests in 1 to 2 hours.

These factors result in a food that maintains a constant blood sugar for a sustained time and as a result prevents hunger. Here is a food that supports the diabetic’s diet and helps maintain a healthy insulin system in those not affected with blood sugar problem.

Mesquite flour not only stabilizes blood sugar but it tastes great with a sweet, slightly nutty with a hint of molasses flavor. Further this food delivers a big hit of nutritional value.

It is high in dietary fiber and protein including lysine. The ground pods are between 11% and 17% protein. Mesquite is a good source of calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, and zinc. Mesquite is low carbohydrate, low glycemic and low in fat.

The bean pods should be harvested early before they begin to dry and harden. They can be eaten raw or boiled like green beans. When eaten raw they have a bitter sweet green apple taste, which I enjoy.
Heath Assessment

Setting up a cleansing or detox program is not an easy task. You need to undergo various procedures. It includes health history evaluation, physical examinations, biochemistry tests, mineral level tests, dietary analysis and other related specific tests to diagnose your entire health status. These are helpful in determining the appropriate natural procedure that you should take to clean up your body.

Take note, analyzing your present health status, disease, and symptoms as a result of your lifestyle, familial or inherent patterns, and diets can help in creating a body detox plan that is best suited for you. Remember, any healing procedure needs a plan that must be followed accordingly to achieve positive results.

1. Proper Diet. People who are lacking energy and nutrients need a diet which is high in protein and nutrients for improving their health. Mineral deficiencies, fatigue, and low functions of organs should have a much supportive diet. However, in this particular circumstance, short cleaning of the body for three days can help in eliminating old debris. It also prepares your body for building healthier blocks.

If you feel congested with travel, stresses, and different foods, drink juices or eat lightly for a few days. It can display a huge difference. You could also eat low protein foods, high-rich-carbohydrate foods, and vegetarian foods for a couple of years. Mild detox can consist of vegetable meals which add proteins in your body. Fresh fish with a lot of vegetables can also energize you.
2. Using natural herbs. There are different body organs which are prone to the high development of toxins. One of them is your colon. Keep in mind that large intestines can accommodate much toxicity which can result to its sluggish functioning. So, detox programs are created to solve this problem. Fiber supplements cleansing diet are incorporated for cleaning and toning colons. It includes herbal laxatives like psyllium seed husk used alone or combined with agents such as betonite clay, acidophilus culture, and Aloe Vera powder. Enemas using herbs, diluted coffee, or water can be used for cleaning your liver, another important organ of your body.

Only young asparagus shoots are commonly eaten; once the buds start to open, the shoots quickly turn woody and become strongly flavoured.

Asparagus is low in calories and is very low in sodium. It is a good source of vitamin B6, calcium, magnesium and zinc, and a very good source of dietary fiber, protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, thiamin, riboflavin, rutin, niacin, folic acid, iron, phosphorus, potassium, copper, manganese and selenium, as well as chromium, a trace mineral that enhances the ability of insulin to transport glucose from the bloodstream into cells. The amino acid asparagine gets its name from asparagus, the asparagus plant being rich in this compound.

The shoots are prepared and served in a number of ways around the world, typically as an appetizer or vegetable side dish. In Asian-style cooking, asparagus is often stir-fried. Cantonese restaurants in the United States often serve asparagus stir-fried with chicken, shrimp, or beef, and also wrapped in bacon. Asparagus may also be quickly grilled over charcoal or hardwood embers. It is also used as an ingredient in some stews and soups.

Asparagus can also be pickled and stored for several years. Some brands may label shoots prepared this way as "marinated".

The bottom portion of asparagus often contains sand and dirt, so thorough cleaning is generally advised in cooking it.

Medicinal:

Nutrition studies have shown asparagus is a low-calorie source of folate and potassium. Its stalks are high in antioxidants. "Asparagus provides essential nutrients: six spears contain some 135 micrograms (µg) of folate, almost half the adult RDI (recommended daily intake), 20 milligrams of potassium," notes an article in Reader's Digest. Research suggests folate is key in taming homocysteine, a substance implicated in heart disease. Folate is also critical for pregnant women, since it protects against neural tube defects in babies. Several studies indicate getting plenty of potassium may reduce the loss of calcium from the body.

"Asparagus has long been recognized for its medicinal properties," wrote D. Onstad, author of Whole Foods Companion: A Guide for Adventurous Cooks, Curious Shoppers and Lovers of Natural Foods. "Asparagus contains substances that act as a diuretic, neutralize ammonia that makes us tired, and protect small blood vessels from rupturing. Its fiber content makes it a laxative, too."
Toxins accumulate within our bodies and must be purged in order for it to function at it's best. Detoxifying your body will help heal it and to regain energy.

The body can be naturally detoxified through the use of natural herbs. This is usually not a single step process, but an ongoing daily continued process needed for the body's ability to effectively remove toxins every day.

To assist in the body de-toxification process, the amount of toxins entering the body must be controlled. This means the use of refined sugar, tobacco products, alcohol, caffeine, drugs, and household chemicals, just to name a few, must be restricted.

To facilitate the detox process, you should start by eating organic natural foods, drinking plenty of water and exercising on a regular basis. The body will adjust easily with a gradual change in the detox process.

Here are some herbs used as a home remedy for natural body detoxification:

1. Psyllium Seeds and Husks- acts as a natural laxative and is high in fiber. Soak the seeds in water before using. This supports healthy bowel functions.

2. Cascara Sagrada- used as natural laxative. It is safe for longer duration uses and strengthens the colon muscle.

3. Hydranga Root and Joe Pye Weed (Gravel Root)- prevents, dissolves, and expels stones and crystals in the kidneys and bladder.

4. Alder Buckthorn's Bark- must be dried and stored for one year before using because the fresh bark is very strong and can be toxic.

5. Juniper Berries- detoxifies and strengthens the urinary tract, bladder and kidneys. Not good for prolong use as it puts stress on the kidneys.

6. Burdock Seeds and Root- Helps in the removal of heavy metals inside the body.

7. Grapefruit, celery, lemon, fennel, rosemary, basil, thyme, and patchouli contain essential oils which effectively flush toxins from underneath the skin and stimulates lymph circulation.

8. Dandelion Root and Milk Thistle- strengthens and cleanses the liver. Milk Thistle contains silymarin which protects and helps regenerate the liver. Dandelion Root is useful in the removal of waste products from the kidneys and gallbladder.

Keeping toxins out of your body will ensure a healthier you.

Stay Healthy!

When thinking about the natural and healthy things that we put into our bodies, we often over look the things that are outside our bodies. What I mean by this is the things we have to touch on a daily basis. Like the sink, the toilet the doors knobs, etc.

If we can kill the germs before they are able to reach our bodies, the healthier we will be for it.

The majority of the products used today contain chemicals which can be just as bad as the germs that the product was made to fight. It is easier to keep our home clean verses having to go out into the public and deal with items that other people may have contaminated.

I just recently heard on the radio of a test that was conducted on the handles of shopping carts in various location stores with a result of 70% of the handles being contaminated with fecal matter.

Some stores are now displaying sanitation wipes for customers to use to clean the handles of their chosen shopping cart.

It is important to practice safe sanitation habits when out and about.

How many times have you gone out to a fast food restaurant and did not wash your hands before eating your hamburger? Or if you did go wash your hands, how many times did you touch the door knob when exiting the rest room? Did the person before you wash their hands when they left the rest room?

A safe practice for this situation is to use a paper towel to open the door before exiting the restroom and then throw the paper towel away after exiting.

Or how about the salt and pepper shakers sitting on the tables. Did you put salt or pepper or catchup on your burger and then use your hands to eat your burger? Or when you left the restaurant, did you pick your teeth with your finger nail?

These are the things we rarely think about that can spread germs to one another.

Listed below is an all natural cleaner that you can use around the home for sanitizing. The formal can be carried in a small spray bottle and placed in a purse or brief case to be used when away from home.

You may also be able to shop around and purchase products that are chemical free and all natural that do just as well as the chemical version.

Here is the formula:

Materials

• Water
• White Vinegar
• Lemon Juice
• Cinnamon
• Tea Tree Oil (optional)

Instructions:

Step 1: Fill a clean spray bottle half way with regular or distilled water.
Step 2: Fill the bottle nearly the rest of the way with white vinegar.
Step 3: Add a teaspoon of lemon, a dash of cinnamon, and 3-5 drops of
tea tree oil (tea tree oil kills germs naturally).
Step 4: Label the bottle or mark it in some way so its contents can be identified.

Stay Clean!

Ingredients:

Vinegar 50% (Chinkiang Vinegar if available)
Garlic 50%. (The best garlic is the one with a purple skin.)

In this recipe we are going to work with a one litre bottle of vinegar and 5 heads of garlic. However, the recipe can be cut by half or more for smaller portions, as long as the correct ratios are maintained.

Preparation:

Vinegar – You may use organic unpasteurized apple cider vinegar from the health food store, or rice vinegar from an Oriental grocery store. The best Chinese vinegar is called Chinkiang Vinegar which got a gold medal in 1985 in France.

1. Peel off the garlic skin and crack the garlic.
2. In a large glass bowl, add the garlic to the vinegar, mix it up, and then pour the concoction into glass jars. Store the mixture in a dark place for at least two weeks (4-6 weeks is best). Then it is ready to use.

If you keep this juice in a cool place in a well sealed jar, usually it is good for 20 years or longer, especially if it contains the famous dark Chinese rice vinegar. You may take out the garlic after soaking it for one month and bring the tonic with you when travelling to primitive places with a lot of contagious disease.

The formulations and recipes presented in most materials refer to adult dosages (unless the work is specifically geared toward remedies for children). To work the dosages for children there are several different methods and charts.

Dillings Formula:

Take the age in years of the child and divide by 20 to get the portion of the adult dose to administer.

Example: a 6 year old child = 6 divided by 20 = 3/10ths

Young's Formula:

Take the age in years of the child and divide by the age in years of the child + 12 and this will equal the portion of the adult dose to administer.

Example: a 6 year old child divided by 6 + 12 (18) = 1/3 the adult dose

Cowling's Rule:

Divide the age at the next birthday by 24.

Example: a 5-year-old would be 6 at the next birthday; 6 divided by 24 equals 6/24 or 1/4. Dose would be 1/4 the adult dosage.

Clark's Rule:

Divide the weight in *pounds of the child by 150 to give the approximate fraction of the adult dosage.

(*pounds: using a dosage based on the weight is a more sensible choice. Children vary considerably in size despite their ages. A small 6 year old would require less than a large 6 year old).

When in doubt, always ask a person knowledgeable in the area of herbal dosages.

Thanks!

For the last few decades, ancient civilizations have used the herb in both cooking form and medicine form. Although the technology back then wasn’t close to what it is today, the ancient civilizations knew that ginger root would help prevent ailments ranging from motion sickness to athlete’s foot. With ginger root having anti-inflammatory properties, it can also make the pain of rheumatoid arthritis less intense. Women that drink ginger tea have said that it helps them eliminate menstrual cramps completely.

What many people don’t know, is the fact that ginger root isn’t really classified as a root, but instead an underground stem. Even though it is a very useful vitamin and supplement, it is harvested year round. The harvests, which are obtained roughly five months or so after being planted, are used in the creation of products such as candied ginger and ginger syrup. Harvests that are obtained later can be sold as fresh ginger. The longer the ginger remains in the ground before being harvested, the spicier and hotter it gets.

Keep in mind that not anyone can grow ginger. It takes a special type of soil, which means that it won’t grow anywhere. It is normally grown commercially, in large harvests. Ginger is always in high demand, as it serves a lot of useful purposes. From adding spice to food to healing certain ailments, ginger root is easily one of the best vitamins around.
It can be used with cookies and breads, or used to spice up your jellies and jams. When you shop for ginger root, you should ensure that the gnarly fist like bulb is smooth, the surface hard to the touch, and the weight being somewhat heavy. If the bulb is hard and light in weight, it won’t be as good.
Some of these home remedies may or may not work for everyone. Some experimenting may be needed as to which remedy, if any, will work for you.

Women can get menstrual cramps before, after, and during their menstrual cycle. After doing some research, many women complain they get constipated after taking over-the-counter pain medications. Some pain killers, such as 'neurofen' have an ingredient that cause constipation, making natural home remedies a better choice for relief.

Many women have found that placing a hot water bottle or heating pad just below the belly button helps to ease the pain menstrual cramps. An emergency heating pad can be made by filling a sock with dried pinto beans or dried rice and heating it in the microwave for about 1-2 minutes.

Supplemental vitamins and food that are high in vitamin-B, zinc, calcium, and magnesium have been found to reduce the menstrual pain and bloating. Calcium is known to help maintain muscle tone as well as prevent cramps and pain.

800 mg. of calcium is the recommended daily intake for most women. Increasing magnesium intake is also recommended, since it helps the body absorb the calcium. A good source of magnesium include beans, whole wheat, tofu, shrimp, nuts, and vegetables and pharmaceutical grade supplement.

I usually like to refer to using pharmaceutical grade nutritionals because the manufacturing of these nutritionals usually mean they are as pure as possible if made by a company that take pride in the quality of their products.

Also, due to the sometimes lack of time and resources to grow our own nutritional food, high quality supplements are the second best way to obtain what our bodies need and crave. Contact me if you are looking for references to excellent pharmaceutical companies.

It is suggested that you should not eat chocolate while you are menstruating. Many women state their cramps get worse when they eat chocolate. Instead, eat fruits and stay away from the junk food.

Here are a few herbal remedies that may help relieve menstrual pain:
-----------------------------------------------------

Oregano Tea-

This easy-to-make tea is made in about less than 15 minutes, and will take the menstrual cramps away in a matter of minutes.

Ingredients: Oregano, sugar, water

Preparation:

1. Mix a cup of water and half a tea spoon of oregano in a pot and bring to a boil.
2. Place a coffee filter or a napkin over a coffee cup so that the herbs can be filtered out later.
3. When the water in the pot comes to a boil, pour it into the cup.
4. Remove the filter leaving only the liquid tea in the cup.
5. Add sugar to taste, stir and drink.

Dosage: drink 3-4 cups a day during cycle.
-----------------------------------------------------

Chamomile Tea-

Chamomile is widely used to treat menstrual cramps and discomfort.

Ingredients: Chamomile flowers (dried)- 2 tsp., water- 1 cup, sugar or honey

Preparation:

1. Add 2 teaspoons of dried Chamomile flowers to a cup of boiling water and let it steep for at least 5 minutes.
2. Strain the solution through a coffee filter.
3. Add sugar or honey to taste and drink.

Dosage: a good preventive measure is to start drinking Chamomile tea a couple of days before you are expecting your menstrual cycle to start, and then drink at least 2 cups everyday during your cycle.
-----------------------------------------------------

Ginger Root Tea-

Ginger root has been found to help relieve the pain associated with menstrual cramps.

Ingredients: Sliced ginger root (1-handful), water- 1 cup, honey or sugar

1. Mix the sliced ginger in a pan of boiling water and let simmer for 15 minutes.
2. Pour the tea into a coffee cup through a strainer or coffee filter.
3. Add sugar or honey to taste.

Dosage: drink 2-3 cups a day during your menstrual cycle.
-----------------------------------------------------

Blue Cohosh Tea (also called Sqaw Root)-

Here is an herb that has many uses besides menstrual pain.

Blue Cohosh was used as a medicinal herb by the American Indians, and can also be used as a dietary supplement that can induce labor, regulate menstrual flow, suppress menstruation, and ease the pain and difficulty that accompany childbirth.

Many Native American tribes and later herbologists and mid-wives would use this herb in conjunction with other herbs and fluids for abortive and contraceptive purposes. As such, this herb should not be taken during pregnancy.

Ingredients: Blue Cohosh root (dried)- 1 oz., water- 2 cups, sugar or honey

Preparation:

1. Add 1 oz. of dried blue cohosh to 2 cups of boiling water.
2. Boil for 3-4 minutes.
3. Add sugar or honey to taste.

Dosage: drink 1/4 to 1/2 cup, two to four times a day.

**Because of its alkaloids, blue cohosh should not be used for longer than 4-6 months. The alkaloid elevate blood pressure in susceptible individuals when used regularly for longer than six months. Do not use blue cohosh if you have a history of stroke or have high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes. Blue cohosh should not be used during pregnancy. Don't inhale it or get it in your eyes. And do not eat the berries.
-----------------------------------------------------

Squaw Vine Tea-

Squaw vine is recommended by herbalists to treat menstrual pains and cramps, to regulate menstruation and relieve heavy bleeding. This herb is sometimes used to stimulate breast-milk production as well, and in some cases, this herb has been used to treat diarrhea. This herb was used in a lotion or salve form to treat nursing mother's sore or cracked nipples.

Ingredients: Sqaw Vine (dried)-1 tsp., water- 1 cup, sugar or honey

Preparations:

1. Mix 1tsp. of dried sqaw vine to 1 cup of boiling water.
2. Let steep for 3 minutes.
3. Pour liquid through a strainer or coffee filter into a coffee cup.
4. Add sugar or honey to taste.

Dosage: drink 3 times a day during cycle.
-----------------------------------------------------

False Unicorn Herbal Tea-

False unicorn has great medicinal use. It is used to treat venereal disease, such as gonorrhea. A small, finely chopped piece of the root is simmered in 3 cups of boiling water for 20 minutes. The strained, cooled liquid was used both as a vaginal douche and wash to get rid of this infection.

This root has also been used to prevent possible miscarriages and to stop hemorrhage.

This herb seems to have a regulatory effect on the female reproductive system, encouraging a regular menstrual cycle, and it is given to women with absent or irregular cycles. This herb also assists the ovaries in releasing hormones at the right point in the month.

It may take several months for the herb to have a significant effect on the cycle. False unicorn is also used to treat endometriosis, uterine infections, ovarian cysts, and menopausal symptoms.

Ingredients: False unicorn root- 2 tsp., water- 1 cup, sugar or honey

Preparation:

1. Mix 2 tsp. of root in 1 cup of water in a sauce pan.
2. Bring water to a boil and then turn heat down to a slow simmer.
3. Let simmer for 10-15 minutes.
4. Pour tea into a coffee cup through a coffee filter or strainer.
5. Add sugar or honey to taste.

Dosage: 1 cup 3 times a day.

These are just a few of the many herbs that can be used as home remedies or emergency herbal remedies to combat the pain of menstruation. It is important that you learn to identify these herbs if you plan on harvesting and using them yourself. These herbs can be purchased from the internet or herbal stores. Make sure you obtain the freshest herbs possible.

Charles
Charliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00177364539498093342noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-973788579721579762.post-2198406273829377252010-07-17T12:20:00.004-06:002010-07-17T12:37:38.582-06:00Making Your Own Lotions, Creams and Salves- Part 2

Aloe Moisturizing Hand Cream

1/4 cup rosewater

12 drops herbal extract

1 tbsp aloe gel

1/8 cup sweet almond oil

1/2 tbsp peanut oil

1 tsp cocoa butter

1/2 tbsp olive oil

1/4 tsp anhydrous lanolin

1/2 tbsp liquid lecithin

1/8 oz. grated beeswax

400 I.U. vitamin E

6 drops tincture of Benzoin

Melt the waxes, oils, cocoa butter, lanolin and lecithin and allow to cool a bit as per procedure (above).

Place aloe gel in blender and whip for a bit. They tend to spoil after time and have to be made more often. This is just a small inconvenience when you have the knowledge of knowing that the best ingredients are being used.

To overcome having to throw out spoiled products, just make enough to last until you have to make another batch. Another key point to remember is not to use your bare fingers to mix ingredients as this can contaminate the batch when there are no chemical preservatives being used. Instead use a small plastic knife or spatula or a clean applicator to remove small amounts of the product you are going to apply.

By themselves, oils and waxes will remain stable. It is the introduction of the herbal infusion, or aloe gel, or unsterilized water that presents the problem of mold and bacteria. It is also possible to make or purchase extracts of the herbs you wish to include and use those in your products, rather than an infusion.

Remember to use boiling water to sterilize glass containers. For plastic type containers, use alcohol for sterilizing.

There are two natural preservatives which can stabilize your homemade product. Tincture of Benzoin can be found at the local pharmacy and has been used commercially for a long time.

It is applied at the rate of 1 drop per ounce of product. Becoming more popular each year is grapefruit seed extract, available through herbal supply shops, and is applied at the same rate.

Vitamin E also has preservative qualities. It's not as effective as benzoin tincture or grapefruit seed extract, but 200 to 400 I.U. per ounce will not only help out with longevity, it's also great for the skin.

If you are going to use aloe in your products, use food grade aloe. Fresh aloe straight from the houseplant will quickly develop mold. Food grade aloe has already been stabilized.

If the recipe calls for glycerin, it always means food grade vegetable glycerin. At no time should you use any other type.

The oil from sweet almond, safflower, olive, corn, peanut, wheat germ, jojoba and small amounts of vitamin E oil, are oils most commonly used in making home cosmetics. In the recipes to follow, the ingredient lecithin refers to the liquid type. When lanolin is used it will be the anhydrous lanolin.

One other ingredient you will need is beeswax. Beeswax melts at 148ºF, and melts more quickly if you first grate it up. A hand held rotary grater with the large holes for grating makes grating much faster.

A few other utensils/tools which you will need are a blender, or similar item which is capable of making mayonnaise, since the process of combining oils and water is similar. You will also need a stainless steel or enamel double boiler. It is absolutely essential to melt the waxes and oils in the top portion of the double boiler over hot water in the bottom pan.

Glycerin & Rosewater Lotion:

Long known for its soothing properties, this is the easiest of the skin lotions to prepare. For a small trial size, combine one ounce of rosewater with one ounce of vegetable glycerin. A 2-oz flip-top bottle makes an excellent handy dispenser.

Hot Weather Spritz:

In a small spritzer bottle, mix 1 cup of distilled water plus 3-5 drops of essential oil of lavender. Keep mixture refrigerated and spritz on skin to cool off when needed. This is especially nice during hot weather trips. A man might prefer the spicy scent of oil of coriander, while lemon tends to be gender neutral.

Lavender water or orange water or other floral water can be purchased for this use, but essential oil and distilled water is cheaper.

Masks:

Ingredients: powdered oatmeal and powdered almond

Both of these powders can be made at home by grinding oatmeal or almonds in a coffee grinder. One other ingredient that can be used is plain yogurt. It makes a refreshing mask when combined with oatmeal and a little lemon juice. Brewer's yeast can also be used.

To make:

Add distilled water, a few drops at a time, to a tablespoon or two of the oatmeal or almond powder until you have a paste. Apply paste on your face, avoiding the eye area, then allow the mask to dry. When ready, use a washcloth and water that is as warm as you can tolerate and place the cloth over your face for a few minutes to soften the mask. Then wash your face clean with warm water and follow with a cool water splash.

You can also use floral waters such as lavender, rose, or orange to make the paste, or you could use honey. Honey and oatmeal masks were often used in the older days. A mask should be applied once a week to revive the skin by getting rid of the dead skin cells.

Creams:

Step One: Melt the waxes, fats, liquid lecithin, cocoa butter, and honey in the top of a double boiler over simmering water. Watch that the mixture gets only warm enough to melt the contents. Beeswax should be grated for easiest melting. Make sure all is blended well and then remove from heat. Allow to cool for about a minute. Add the vitamin E if it is used.

Step Two: In a mixer bowl or blender, add the water, glycerin and herb extract, the tincture of benzoin or grapefruit seed extract, and a few drops of essential oil.

Step Three: While blender or mixer is operating, slowly add the melted oils and waxes into the water mixture. It will begin to thicken. The longer the blending, the fluffier it will become. It will appear to be a little loose at this point, but will continue to harden as it comes to room temperature. Pour into a suitable jar and allow to sit on the counter for 20 to 30 minutes, then cap and store in the refrigerator.

Face and Body Cream:

1/3 cup coconut oil
1/8 cup sweet almond oil
1/8 cup vegetable glycerin
2/3 cup rosewater (or sterile water)
1 tbsp liquid lecithin
1/4 oz. grated beeswax
9 drops tincture of benzoin

Follow directions as given in Procedure above. Shelf life is about one month.

CharlesCharliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00177364539498093342noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-973788579721579762.post-54438468309390671632010-07-15T21:11:00.011-06:002010-07-15T21:49:49.510-06:00Importance Of Good Quality Supplements

As most of us are aware, getting the full nutritional value out of the foods we consume on a daily basis is a task within itself. After cleaning and reconnecting the terminals, wipe them with petroleum jelly to prevent future corrosion.

23. Cleaning the car- Use baking soda to clean your car lights, chrome, windows, tires, vinyl seats, and floor mats without worrying about unwanted scratch marks. Here’s another way to clean your vegetables as well.

35. Extinguish grease or electrical fires- Baking soda can help in the initial handling of minor grease or electrical kitchen fires, because when baking soda is heated, it gives off carbon dioxide, which helps to smother the flames.

For small cooking fires (frying pans, broilers, ovens, grills), turn off the gas or electricity if you can safely do so. Stand back and throw handfuls of baking soda at the base of the flame to help put out the fire. Never throw baking soda into a deep fryer. This may cause the grease to splatter on you.

There are many more uses for baking soda. The fun part is researching and experimenting to find more useful benefits.

CharlesCharliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00177364539498093342noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-973788579721579762.post-45636402762124117532010-06-17T10:01:00.002-06:002010-06-17T10:04:28.313-06:00Important Fiber Facts
Research has shown fiber to be powerful toward a healthy diet and lifestyle, but many people aren't taking this nutrient seriously.

Here are 9 important facts about fiber:

1. Fiber can actually help with overeating. All high
fiber foods will take longer to chew and digest,
making you feel satisfied longer.

2. Fiber fights diseases. A diet high in fiber can
help to prevent colon cancer and heart disease. High
fiber helps the body to eliminate cholesterol by
binding it in the digestive tract.

3. More fiber needs more water. In order to keep
fiber moving through your digestive tract, you'll
need to consume a lot of water. With your fiber, you'll
need eight or more glasses of water every day.

4. Grains offer the most fiber. Dietary fiber is
actually plant matter that we cannot digest. The best
sources are whole grains and concentrated grain
products.

5. Kids need fiber as well. Children that are older
than 2 years of age should consume a daily intake of
fiber. Kids are most receptive to fiber found in
fruits, vegetables, and even fortified breakfast
cereals.

6. Most popular foods don't have enough fiber. If
you like the more popular foods, you probably need
to increase your intake of fiber.

7. You can get enough fiber. If you eat more than
50 grams of fiber in a day, you can get diarrhea
and bloating, which can interfere with your body's
absorption of other key minerals.

8. Fiber cannot be cooked out. When you cook
your fruits and vegetables, don't worry about cooking
the fiber out, as it stays. The fiber found in
fruits and vegetables aren't just in the skin or
in the peel.

9. Getting the right amount of fiber in your diet
doesn't have to be hard. Even though you may think
so, getting the amount of fiber you need isn't very
hard to do. All you have to do is eat the right
foods and you'll be well on your way to a fiber
rich lifestyle.

Fiber is something you don't want to skip, as it is one of the key components to eating healthy.

Fiber can serve many different purposes, which are listed above. If you aren't getting enough fiber in your diet you should do something about it now instead of waiting until it is too late.

CharlesCharliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00177364539498093342noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-973788579721579762.post-22787676422907760372010-06-17T09:35:00.001-06:002010-06-17T09:37:47.099-06:004th of July Cookout- Vegetarian Style
Fourth of July is quickly approaching. This is a time when many enjoy a holiday cookout. Whether you’re expecting vegetarian guests, you’ve just became vegetarian yourself, or you’d just like to add more meatless recipes to give some variety to your cookout menu, there are all kind of ways to prepare meatless options.

A clean and well lubricated grill is important for vegetarian style cookouts. This is because vegetarian foods are more fragile than meat and do not contain as much fat. You would not want your veggies sticking to the grill.

Traditionally, vegetables have been considered a side dish in most meals, but at a cookout they can take center stage as the entrée. Almost any kind of vegetable is great for grilling.

Complement your meal by serving them over pasta, rice or polenta. You can also make them into extraordinary sandwiches with a soy-based cheese and some freshly baked rolls or bread.

Cut the vegetables lengthwise into thin slices in the case of zucchini and eggplant, or into thick rings, in the case of onions, tomatoes and peppers. If you'd rather have your veggies in handy bite-size pieces for serving with pasta and the like, try using a special pan for the grill with small holes that keep the veggies from falling through the grill and being lost. And probably the easiest way to grill vegetables on the grill is shish-ka-bob style!

A veggie shish-ka-bob recipe that I came up with is arranged by putting a slice of yellow bell pepper, mushroom, chunk of potato, slice of onion, slice of carrot, slice of red bell pepper, slice of jalapeno, chunk of pineapple, chunk of potato, mushroom, slice of onion, slice of carrot, chuck of pineapple, slice of green bell pepper, slice of jalapeno. I then brush on a thin coat of honey, sprinkle on pepper spices and roast on the grill.

Don’t forget to balance out those grilled vegetables with some fresh fruit salads, perfectly chilled and juicy. Watermelon, strawberries, grapes, and citrus fruits all complement one another well in a delightful fruit salad prepared with non-dairy whipped cream.

Also use fruits to experiment with some fun smoothies and slushies for the kids – they’re fun and better for them than sugary sodas.

Charles Charliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00177364539498093342noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-973788579721579762.post-55097159152445999512010-06-14T22:49:00.002-06:002010-06-14T22:53:57.092-06:00Homemade Organic Fungicides and Bug Repellants

If you are growing your own herbs for teas or spices or for natural home remedies, it is important to keep your plants healthy and protected from those little pests that like to destroy your hard work.

Since we are working toward keeping everything eco-friendly and healthy, that last thing we want to use on our plants are chemical sprays.

If you are going to use a commercial pesticide for your plants, ensure that it is organic in composition. If you want to stick to the format of home remedies and making things yourself, below are a few popular home concotions that will get the job done.

The following ingredients should be mixed in a spray bottle so that the solutions can be sprayed directly onto your plants to control fungus and disease:

Hydrogen Peroxide Spray: Mix 1 tablespoon per gallon of water.

Oil and Baking Soda Spray: 1/2 tablespoon of baking soda and 1/4 teaspoon of cooking oil mixed in a quart of warm water.

Listerine Spray: 1 teaspoon of Listerine mixed into a quart of warm water.

The above sprays should be applied to your plants every ten days. It will help with the disease and fungus problems.

To help control insects, use the following recipes:

Insects can be controlled with a solution of soap and cooking oil. Mix 1/2 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid and a 1/4 teaspoon of cooking oil into a quart of warm water. Spray the underside and top of all the leaves. This will help stop most of the common pests that love to destroy your plants.

The spray should be applied every 10 days.

Insecticide Garlic Spray:

Ingredients: 1 Garlic Bulb, 2 Cups Water, 1 Gallon Water

To make take an entire garlic bulb and two cups of water and blend in blender. Mix at high speed for 1-2 minutes. Pour mixture into a container and set it aside for up to one day. Strain the liquid through a cheese cloth. Mix the liquid with one gallon of water. Apply liberally on top and bottom of leaves.

Tomato Leaf Insecticide:

Ingredients: 1 oz. tomato leaves; 1 quart water

Take one ounce of tomato leaves and add to one quart of water and blend thoroughly. Strain the resulting liquid and use to repel insects. This works well on white cabbage butterflies too.

There are hundreds of natural insecticides and fungicides that work just as well as their toxic chemical counterparts. So why use chemicals?

Charles
Charliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00177364539498093342noreply@blogger.com0
